Your child's first visit
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. We see children from age 1. We don’t have a pediatric dentist on staff, so if your child needs specialized care, we’ll refer you to a pediatric dental specialist and explain why.
A first visit is short. We count the teeth, check the gums and bite, look for early signs of decay, and show you how to brush your child’s teeth at home. Most toddlers sit on a parent’s lap for the exam. We don’t take X-rays unless there’s a reason to.
A few things that help:
- Book a morning visit if your child naps in the afternoon.
- Bring your child to one of your own check-ups first so the room isn’t new to them.
- Talk about the visit in plain words. Skip “it won’t hurt”, which puts the idea in their head.
Our blog has more on helping your child like the dentist.
Check-ups and cleanings for every age
Most people need a check-up and cleaning every six months. Some need them more often, for example if they have gum disease, a lot of fillings, or braces.
At a check-up we:
- examine each tooth for decay and wear, and check old fillings and crowns
- check the gums and measure any gum pockets
- screen for oral cancer (lips, tongue, cheeks and throat)
- take X-rays when they’re due, usually every one to two years for adults
- clean off plaque and tartar, then polish
For children we also watch how adult teeth are coming in and whether the bite is developing normally.
New patient exam, X-rays and cleaning: $99, for adults and children
Children's dental services
- Tooth-coloured fillings
- Custom sports mouthguards for hockey, soccer and other contact sports (see also guarding your child’s smile)
- Bite and alignment checks, and orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign when the time is right
Care for adults and seniors
The same clinic handles the rest of the family: gum disease treatment, root canals, crowns and bridges, dental implants, and teeth whitening. For family members who get anxious at the dentist, we offer sedation dentistry.
Booking the whole family
You can book family members back to back so everyone is seen in one trip. If a child has a toothache or a knocked-out tooth, see our emergency dentist page and call us.
Insurance and CDCP
We bill most dental insurance plans directly. Children under 18 may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan if the family’s adjusted net income is under $90,000 and they don’t have other dental insurance. We accept CDCP.
